A Sunny Goodbye

I took a few pictures as we waited for the ferry this past weekend. 

Even off season you have to get to the ferry early because you never know who will be coming or going.  Luckily there is much to see while you wait.  

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous and the air smelled for Ragosa Roses and the sea. 

Posie jumped out of the car and headed for the little stone fort by the shore.  Generations of kids have played in this little u shaped structure. I remember playing with my cousins while waiting for the old Edmund Musky ferry. 

The plaque on the front reads,

"Sunset Pulpit. 

Given by Dorothy Forbes.

I will lift mine eyes unto the hills"

A beautiful passage given that this little pulpit looks out over the Camden Hills. 

Of course one of the biggest draws for Posie is the lighthouse.  In the summer it is open as a museum and gift shop.  You can climb up to the top of the light and look out over the bay and watch for the ferry making it's way back. 

After a few cart wheels on the lawn we took a quick look around the rocky beach.  We found a few treasures and an empty champagne bottle (there was a wedding on the island this weekend). 

Then Posie yelled,  "Come on guys here comes the ferry! We have to head back to the car!!"

So off we went to head back to the mainland for another week.

The Little Plate Beside my Bed

Today I am posting a picture of the first thing I looked at when I woke up this morning...the little plate that sits on my bedside table.

I put it there years ago to hold any jewelry that I had forgotten to take off.  It usually holds a few pairs of earrings and a ring or two. 

This morning it also holds my new KJP Triton Knot Bracelet which I am loving!  Even though I awoke to another day of rain :( my new rope bracelet screams summer and seeing it improved my day before I even got out of bed!!

God Save the Queen!

In honor of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee I am posting a few things from our sister store Agatha & Louise...

One of the Queen's most endearing qualities, is my mind, is her love of dogs.  In particular her love of Corgis.

How amazingly funny is this glass ornament of a Corgi in a Union Jack Dog Coat!!  LOVE it!!

EVERYTHING is in Bloom!

Yesterday morning I opened my door to discover that everything is blooming here in Portland, Maine!

It feels like every plant in Maine is blooming!!

We have Peonies and Lilacs and Lupine and Irises and a million other pretty plants all blooming right now and it is just beautiful.  

We wait for so long for spring to arrive here in Maine that when it finally gets here we are all so relieved! 

Even the Lupine are standing tall and this makes me think of Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney.  If you have never seen this delightful book you should find it.  It is a wonderful story about making the world a beautiful place. 

Lupine season is something every Mainer looks forward to.  Every year Posie, Gray and I can't wait for our drives North seeing the gorgeous patches of Lupine in full bloom beside the highway. When we arrive on the island we look in the places we know will be filled with the lavender and pink blooms. 

Yesterday though, I decided to make the most of the sun and the flowers and took a long walk around my neighborhood by myself. I smelled the floral perfume of the Peonies and Lilacs and took in the soft shades of the delicate flowers along my route.  I stopped to examine huge blossoms and tiny petals.

It is all so amazingly beautiful!!

I feel so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to plant one of these lovely plants in their yard!  It is like a gift to your neighbors to plant beautiful things.  Like Miss Rumphius scattering her wild flower seeds, anyone who takes the time to plant flowers brings great joy and beauty to all!

Gray Plants Some Potatoes

This morning Gray headed off to Posie's school to help her class plant potatoes. 

While Potatoes are one of the main crops grown here in Maine, Gray and I have never planted them.

With "Planted Potatoes" checked off the list I think Gray might almost be considered a real Mainer (I'm pretty sure your Great, Great Grandfather had to be born here though.)

Posie's teacher has an exciting plan for the students to harvest the potatoes in the fall and then work with the kitchen staff to incorporate the potatoes into a healthy school lunch menu. 

The planting went well and those babies are now safely in the soil ready to become some yummy Maine Potatoes!
